What differs between SRT and VTT
Very little, which is why one is so often mistaken for the other. An SRT file numbers each line and writes times with a comma before the milliseconds. A WebVTT file begins with the word WEBVTT, needs no numbers and writes times with a full stop.
That one character matters. A player given the wrong one usually shows no subtitles and no error, so a file that looks right can still fail.
Which one do you need?
WebVTT is the format web browsers read, so a video player on a website wants a .vtt file. SRT is the older and more widely accepted of the two: most video editors and most upload forms take it.
A converted file carries each line’s start and end, not the timing of single words. A caption style that lights up each word as it is said needs the original transcript.

Questions
Are my subtitles uploaded?
No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else.
My subtitles are out of sync. Can this fix them?
If they are early or late by the same amount all the way through, yes: type that amount in seconds and every line moves. If the gap grows as the video plays, the file was timed against a different cut or frame rate, and a single shift will not fix it.
Is styling kept?
The words and their times are kept. WebVTT position and alignment settings on a time line are dropped, because SRT has nowhere to put them.
What happens to a line moved before the start?
Its time stops at zero. A line cannot begin before the video does.
